Dear
Debra,
What
about special needs children? My daughter has dyslexia and is two grade
levels behind. I have pulled
her from the special ed class where I felt she was not benefiting. I
want to homeschool her and give her a better chance for success.
Do you have any tips with special needs?
-- Michelle B, CA
Dear
Michelle,
Homeschooling
is particularly appropriate for a child with learning challenges. My
father, a retired school psychologist, has always reminded me that
“time on task” is the only consistent thing research has shown to be
a significant factor in kids acquiring a skill or content-base.
So, just the quality of time you are now able to spend with your
daughter in a one-on-one relationship cued to her needs will help her
improve.
There
are several good books available for parents of special needs children.
In particular, I recommend Strategies
for Struggling Learners by Dr. Joe Sutton.

Also,
NATHHAN ( National Challenged Homeschoolers Associated Network, www.nathhan.com)
is a wonderful organization to join. Visit their website for helpful
articles, products and support in homeschooling your special needs
child.
May
God bless your endeavors.
